Using the experience gained from all of this, Kali Linux came after BackTrack in 2013. BackTrack was based on Slackware from v1 to v3, but switched to Ubuntu later on with v4 to v5. There was a similar OS being produced at the same time, Auditor Security Collection (often getting shorted to just Auditor), once again using Knoppix, and efforts were combined (with WHAX) to produce BackTrack. WHAX started at v3, as a nod towards it carrying on from Whoppix. The Ubuntu project has a focus on providing a solid desktop (and server) experience, and it isn’t afraid to build its own.

Much of the software in these repositories is synced from Debian’s repositories. Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it has its own software repositories. The name change was because the base OS changed from Knoppix to Slax. Ubuntu is probably the most well-known Linux distribution. It is well-supported with security and feature updates, very stable, and works on many devices. Debian is one of the oldest and most widely used versions of Linux available, the initial release dating back to 1993. This made way for the next project, WHAX (or the long hand, WhiteHat Slax). About the Operating Systems Kali and Ubuntu are both based on the Debian Linux distribution, or distro for short. Whoppix had releases ranging from v2.0 to v2.7. Organizational differences may be motivated by historical reasons. As can be inferred from the name, it was based on Knoppix for the underlining OS. The first project was called Whoppix, which stood for WhiteHat Knoppix. As a result, Kali has been years in the making and has come a long way. During all these project’s life-time, there has been only a few different developers, as the team has always been small.
